The Confessional
for 4 dancers and 4 musicians, an installation curated at Laban Studio Theatre for CoLab Festival 2024
Unlike the Roman catholic church’s confessional, the confession happening here is not made towards anyone but oneself, prompting an inward conversation, peeling off the apathetic layers that have been obstructing one from listening to themselves. Sedimentation draws an analogy to the physical process of insoluble substances in a suspension gradually precipitating at the bottom, leaving a transparent supernatant above it, as if the heart comes to a tranquil state, the eyes may see oneself with abundant time and minimal distraction. The audience is loosely positioned in the centre of a space surrounded by 4 screens, where projection mapping will take place alongside the multi-dimensional dancing shadows, as well as separating the audience form all the performers. A whole spectrum of music and noise generated by live instrumental playing, field recordings and live electronics, will form a quadraphonic sound environment. Improvisation might be stimulated by prescribed cells or preceding aleatoric writings, guided by crucial minimal instructions that govern the overall structure of the work, but both the players and composer always have the flexibility to generate new ideas or explore different routes of development. It is to encourage the audience to embark on a personal introspective heart excursion, in which the performers be their filial companion.
